Vanayatra – Reach the unreached

Vanayathra is a tour program conducted by VKK with the objective of giving first hand experience of the lives of Vanavasis. This program is not a pleasure trip. It is a journey into the forests and hills exposing the harmonious co-existence of the people with the wilderness, and also to feast the nature’s beauty.

The visit to these places can be a lifetime and life changing experience. So, make a trip with the family and friends. There are four locations at present:

  1. Dandeli, Ambikanagar: North Karnataka
  2. Chipageri: North Karnataka
  3. Kumta – Uttara Koppa: North Karnataka
  4. Gudlupet: Chamaraj nagar- Near Mysore

1. Dandeli, Ambikanagar

This place is around 400 kms from Bangalore. An overnight journey by train or by bus to Hubli on Friday night takes you to these places. A night stay at Ambikanagar is a rich experience.

The famous Kali River Hydal power project is run in this area, and generates around 40% of Karnataka state’s power requirement. This is a reserved forest area and also a trekking spot.

Sunday morning we can visit the Vanavasi areas in the remote forest areas and return back to Bangalore by night train from Hubli. Accommodation and food shall be arranged by VKK.

5.35 AM - Arrival at Hubli junction, Fresh up, Breakfast at Hotel – Sri Krishna Bhavan (pre booking is necessary)
9.00 AM - Proceed to Dandeli with baggage

Day 3, Sunday - Local visit to hadis and other spots
10.40 PM - Departure from Hubli by train
7.00 AM - Arrival at Bangalore

If you want to experience the heavy rains through out the day and the tribal life during rainy season make up your mind and gear up your luggage with raincoat, warm cloths, and gum boots.

8.00 PM - Hubli / Haveri

3. Kumta – Uttara Koppa

Day 1, Friday Night
Departure from Bengaluru to Kumta – By Bus

Day 2, Saturday
Morning -  Alight at Kumta – Ratnakara Vidyarthi Nilaya,  
- To Uttara Koppa via Idugungi and Murdeshwara
- Trek to Gouli Marathi Hamlet up the hill 4kms. Nearly 30,000 people live  there in the dense forest, isolated from the  cities. We have to carry lunch packets
- Return to Kumta for dinner & night halt.

Day 3, Sunday
7.00 AM - proceed to Yana
- From Yana - Gokarna temple & beach, proceed to Gokarna temple
3.00 PM - Proceed from Kumta
- Option 1 – Gokarna temple & beach and board the bus to Bengaluru
- Option 2 – Comeback to Kumta to board bus to Bengaluru
- Option 3 - Kumta/Karwar Train

4. Chamarajnagar, Bandipur, Gundlupet:

Chamarajnagar is a hilltop near Mysore and is 30 kms away from Chamarajnagar town.

Duration: 2days - Saturday & Sunday
Means of transport: Road
Distance from Bangalore: 200 KMs
Journey time: 4 HRs approximately
Approximate cost: By a Tempo Traveler - Rs.1500 – 1800

Important Tourist spots: Bandipur Wild life sanctuary, Himavad Gopalswamy Betta, Parvati Betta

Day 1, Saturday
7.30 AM  - Departure from a single point in Bengaluru
12.00 Noon  - Gundlupet – Kumara Rama Vidyarthi Nilaya – Stay
3.00 PM  - Visit to vanavasi hadi (tribal hamlet)
6.00 PM - back to hostel & spend some time with inmates

Day 2, Sunday
9.00 AM - Starting from Hostel to visit hadis (near Bandipur)
12.00 Noon - Can be planned according to the interest of the team members, since Bandipur is a protected forest and also tiger zone, safari and trekking is banned as per SC orders.  Other beautiful places one can visit – Himavad Gopalaswamy Betta, Parvati Betta, etc.
4.00 PM - If we start journey, can reach Bengaluru by 9.00 pm

The Soliga community is living in these reserved forest areas for ages, surrounded by thick rain forest and wild animals.

There can be can be a hectic one-day trip from Mysore. The journey starts before 8 am from Mysore and ends before 4.30 PM. As there is no public transport to the hills VKK arranges the commutation.

Ideal group: 5 to 15 members.
Visit: Hills and tribal hadis around Beduguli a protected forest area.

Permission from Forest officials in writing is a must to this place

Ideal time: Through out the year.
Expense: Rs. 500/- per head.
